Canticle of Creatures
Saint Francis of Assisi
Most High, Almighty, Good Lord,
Thine is the praise, the glory, the honour
And every blessing.
To you alone, Most High, they belong,
And no man is worthy of naming you.
Praise be to you, my Lord, with all your creatures,
Especially Brother Sun,
Which is the day, and by it you give us light.
It is beautiful and radiates great splendour,
And of you, Most High, he offers us a symbol.
Praise be to you, my Lord, for sister Moon and the stars;
In the sky you formed them, clear, precious and beautiful.
Praise be to you, my Lord, for Brother Wind,
For the air and the clouds, for the serene sky and all weathers,
By which you give support to all your creatures.
Praise be to you, my Lord, for Sister Water,
Who is very useful and humble, precious and chaste.
Praise be to you, my Lord, for Brother Fire,
By whom you light up the night,
It is beautiful and joyful, indomitable and strong.
Praise be to you, my Lord, for sister Mother Earth,
Who supports and governs us,
And produces a variety of fruits with the colourful flowers and grass.
Praise be to you, my Lord, for those who forgive out of love for you,
And endure sickness and tribulation.
Blessed are those who endure them in peace,
For by you, Most High, they will be crowned.
Praise be to you, my Lord, for our sister, bodily Death,
From whom no man living can escape.
Woe to those who die in mortal sin ;
Blessed are those whom she finds conformable to your most holy will,
Because the second death won't harm them.
Praise and bless my Lord,
Give thanks and serve him
With great humility.
